What We Eat in England : Traditional foods
Traditional foods which are all my favorites:
- Bangers (a plain sausage), mash (mashed potatoes) & Heinz baked beans (which are different in England, although I’m not sure why)
- Fish and chips of course
- Toad in the hole, with chips, baked beans & gravy - we used have this for lunch on Thursdays at the local ‘greasy spoon’ (English café with no frills food & service). Oh, what is it? It’s bangers served in Yorkshire pudding batter, cooked until crisp on the outside.
- Pies. Porter’s restaurant in London has a great selection of these.
- Cottage or Shepherd’s pie (one’s lamb, one’s beef). Ground meat (we call it mince) with carrots and such, topped with mash & baked in the oven. cottage pie recipe
- Devon clotted cream (which you eat with fresh scones and jam & it tastes like heaven) See iGourmet.com to find out how to get your hands on some.
- Fruit crumble (which is similar to an American crisp), typically rhubarb or apple, which you can also serve with warm custard or fresh cream. Find crumble recipe – yummy!
- Steamed puddings such as treacle pudding or spotted dick, click for - spotted dick recipe , served with warm custard. Here’s how to make custard from scratch custard recipe - although you can buy a packet version from one of the sites mentioned below to which you just add milk & heat the mixture up.
