What We Eat in England : National holidays & food
Thanksgiving is not celebrated in England (yeah, I know you’d figured that one out), so Christmas & Easter are both turkey eating holidays. Easter can also be a ham or other poultry. Christmas is usually a turkey meal. A traditional Christmas dinner would include:
- Roast Turkey (sometime cooked with chipolatas - small sausages), Cranberry sauce, Bread & or sausage stuffing, Roast potatoes, Vegetables, Gravy
- Christmas pudding to follow (a heavy fruit pudding served with brandy butter)
We would usually pop Christmas crackers before the meal - these are fun poppers that crack when opened and contain small gifts and paper hats. You can then choose to wear the hat throughout the meal or not (OK, it sounds kind of silly now I write it down, but it’s Christmas & you should be having fun!)
See the Christmas menu at Porter’s traditional English restaurant in Covent Garden, London.
